JOHN HESS

Hess' introduction to textiles began at the Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco, where an emphasis on color formulated his approach to weaving. An interest in shapes and patterns then developed while traveling abroad. Weaving begins as a slow, meditative process for Hess, starting with counting threads, measuring, and setting up a grid then moving towards greater freedom and improvisation. Hess has taught at Utah Universities, and private workshops. His work is part of major public and private collections, including commissions for the College of Eastern Utah, the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, and the Salt Lake City International Airport.
