ARTIST STATEMENT
Artist Brent Godfrey uses combinations of figurative techniques and abstraction to make paintings about personal identity, memory, relationships and societal structures. Godfrey is interested in the moments when understanding is shaped and meaning formed through the triumvirate of physical, intellectual and emotional experience. His work incorporates diverse painting techniques hulled from disparate sources. Pop art, abstract expressionism and renaissance techniques are blended without prejudice, creating surprising harmonies and interesting contrasts.
DESCRIPTION • IDENTITIES
In his solo painting exhibition IDENTITIES, Godfrey contemplates the ongoing evolution of our personal persona. Considering intimate values and competing external manipulations, Godfrey’s paintings reflect upon what is immutable and idiosyncratic vs that which is fickle, subject to other people’s opinions and social forces.
As always, Godfrey’s paintings embrace a diversity of styles, creating assorted visuals that carry the eye and mind through unique journeys. Elements of figurative tradition blend with abstraction to consider the evolution of identity, the power of the individual and the pull of societal forces.
